Councillor Vacancies – Co-option Opportunity
Billinge Chapel End Parish Council currently has three vacant seats to be filled by co-option following an uncontested election.
Under Section 21(2) of the Representation of the People Act 1985, where the number of elected councillors is sufficient to form a quorum, the council may co-opt individuals to fill any remaining vacancies.
The Council will begin advertising these vacancies and inviting applications from interested members of the community. This provides an opportunity for residents to become actively involved in local decision-making and represent the interests of the parish.
Please note that no formal decision on co-option can be made until the newly elected councillors have taken up office. Councillors are able to act on behalf of the Council from the fourth day after the election.
There is no statutory time limit for filling vacancies by co-option.
